Lollie and Esther came to us about two years apart. Lollie had been living in a tree in a community near La Fortuna, fed coffee and bread as a regular diet. In the beginning, she was gentle and flightless. We assumed her wings had been clipped for most of her life, until she was “released” into a tree.We spent months working with her as she learned to use her flight instincts. Even now she lacks confidence, but she can loft away from predators and glide from tree to tree. She gets around well enough that we are comfortable allowing her to live outside full time, in the canopy where she belongs.

Esther seems to be a much younger bird and, until she came to our farm, had lived in a small cage for her entire life. Because of her youth, she learned to fly very quickly. And she’s good at it! These days, Esther seems to have all the skills of Amazon parrots living wild in suburban areas. She and Lollie quickly became a bonded pair. It’s unusual to see one without the other close by. They’ve become very territorial over each other and will openly attack anyone they perceive as a threat to their partner. This makes co-existing with them a bit tricky, but we appreciate that these instincts are beneficial to them in the wild and simply deal with the occasional hard bites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both birds are extremely vocal. Sometimes we understand the words they hurl down from the treetops, sometimes we don’t. Being so young, Esther is still picking up bits of random conversations and seems to understand much of their meaning. When she says she wants to burn the barn in the video below, we believe her! She has seen and understood fire when we burned brush piles, and she was angry at the time of this recording because we had just put the new roof on the barn and dogs were starting to hang out in it. Before, the parrots had shared it only with the chickens and the goat. This new development of dogs inhabiting the spaces the parrots had previously felt safe in did not make the parrots happy. They pouted for days. They’ve since adjusted and there’s been no more talk of burning the barn, or burning anything else for that matter. Thank goodness! But we still keep the matches hidden… .
