About Us

Manor Miravalles Animal Sanctuary is a Costa Rica-based organization with roots in the U.S. Formed with the goal of fundraising, this entity is established to give U.S. residents a way to get involved. Monies raised will help fund spay-neuter campaigns, public awareness campaigns, and the improvement of our animal sanctuary public facilities. It will also raise money to provide good quality food and veterinary services for as many animals as possible. The Manor Miravalles Animal Sanctuary facility does not function as a rescue, but works with established rescues in Costa Rica to help with fostering needs, spay-neuter campaigns, public awareness, and education campaigns. Boots-on-the-ground volunteers interact with Costa Rican communities to educate and encourage rewarding, humane relationships between indigenous dogs and their owners.

Our Volunteer Staff

Operations Director Christina Trail brings with her 15 years of experience working in the legal field and a lifetime of experience advocating for animals. She’s a fur-mom for two horses, Sadie and Gracie, and two dogs, Zander and Reyna–the latter being a native Costa Rican pup adopted from Manor Miravalles Animal Sanctuary in January of 2024. Christina performs most of the administrative duties for Manor Miravalles Animal Sanctuary, manages several outreach programs, and performs an assortment of tasks that cause other veteran animal rescuers to just smile and nod.

Site Director Rhonda Kay has twenty years of experience working in the field of animal welfare and more than a decade of experience as the Director of a nonprofit (501c3) animal rescue in the U.S. Her hopes of retiring in Costa Rica were dashed when, after moving there in 2021, animals in need began lining up on her doorstep. Today she manages the daily operations of MMAS and works hands-on with each and every animal in residence.

Remembering Paige

No website of ours would be complete without a dedication to the amazing dog from West Virginia who inspired much of the work we do today, and who surely is looking down from Heaven as she guides animals to us. We honor and remember Paige, world traveler and biter of children, consummate dog diplomat and true soulmate, one of the greatest dogs who ever lived.
